UI/UX + Group Project
FRN App + Case Study
synopsis

App design created for the student-run movement, Food Recovery Network. Created
to aid against food waste and hunger in the United States. This movement does so much for the communities they serve in person with student volunteers and non-profits across the US. This app design is created to reach a more specific community, particularly college students who experience food insecurity.

A clear user flow with a peaceful color palette that ties with their brand guidelines aids the user experience and creates an app that is useful for all in the respective community.

App Design

Prototype

overview
problem

Explore innovative approaches to diminish the staggering volume of food waste produced in the United States.

solution

An app that functions as a "live blog feed" for food donations managed by the
Food Recovery Network (FRN). It connects individuals experiencing food insecurity
with affordable food options through FRN's donations to nearby soup kitchens or food pantries. Users can see who is donating food and where, reserve donations, and pick them up whenever needed at no cost.

research findings

We researched the impact of food waste in the US and explored existing solutions nationwide. Additionally, we investigated apps related to food delivery, focusing on those addressing food waste. Our user research involved in-depth interviews with three individuals experienced in managing food waste.

1.

In the U.S., food waste is the most commonly landfilled and incinerated material, totaling 108 billion pounds annually.

3.

A major concern in the food industry regarding donations is ensuring the
qualityof leftover food for those in need.

2.

34 million people face hunger in the U.S. & 30-40% of our food supply in the U.S. is never eaten.

4.

Food waste is more commonly addressed in urban and liberal areas where homeless communities are more prevalent.

competitive analysis

Before starting the design process we analyzed the competition to gain an understanding of current food delivery and/or the few food waste apps. To understand what they do well and what they lack.

To summarize, these apps all do a good job in helping the user receive food that they purchased but most, if not all are not specifically geared towards helping the food insecure community and actually add to food waste if the food is not picked up on time.
